• What do you do?I’m an early childhood teacher and the assistant manager of the 2-4 year old area at an early childhood centre in Ponsonby
• What qualifications do you need to get this job?
I have a Bachelor of education and I’m currently in the middle of doing my teacher registration which takes two years
• How do you get your foot in the door?
I did relieving for select education and while in training I did placements each semester in different centres which is how I got offered my first job. It’s a really easy profession to get into if you’re skilled as there is such a lack of teachers at the moment.
• What hours do you do? Days of work?
I work Monday to Friday 7.30-4 but often work longer but no later than 5.30
• Do you get a company vehicle?
I wish! But don’t need one there is no travelling involved
• Room for promotion?
Yes definitely there are often jobs available in management positions throughout the company and there is always the opportunity to work in head office if that’s what you’re into.
• Allowances?
Training support, health insurance, recruitment incentives….all the standard stuff
• Travel involved/ opportunities?
No travel involved unless for conference or PD courses
• Normal time off?
Time off is standard of most places
• To you get to attend many functions/events?
Haven’t been working here long and there hasn’t been many since I’ve been here but I know were having a Christmas party…Yay
• Social group? Drinkees?
Try and have drinks most Fridays but normally end up having drinks with the same couple of girls from work
• Outfits/Clothes/ Uniform?
Really lucky get to dress casual and comfy…..just no little tops or skirts which suites me fine
• Any perks to the job?
All that really cheesy stuff- building relationships with children and families and watching the children grow and develop into awesome little people
• Any downsides to the job?
Would have to be in winter when it’s constantly raining and the kids are all stuck inside for weeks…..it gets very loud!
