The Dux De Lux is regarded as one of the most unique bars in Christchurch, even after 30 years of providing patrons with quality vegetarian meals and home-brewed beer. I could not resist reviewing this bar for this month’s article for one reason. It is simply legendary! I have heard from many people that The Dux de Lux holds great memories for themselves and friends. I am the same, as this is simply the one and only place I go with my best friend, which has now become a tradition of ours. So why not make it one of yours?
The Dux de Lux is situated in the southeast corner of the Arts Centre is Latin for the phrase Masters of the Finest, which easily lives up to this expectation. Founded in 1978, the Dux de Lux now has two great locations – Christchurch and Queenstown. The restaurant and bar is known for its hand crafted beer, fantastic vegetarian and seafood cuisine and live music.
The atmosphere is undeniably what makes Dux de Lux what it is today, with its unique outdoor areas, individually crafted wooden top bars, and art works from local Christchurch artists. The bar and restaurant are separated into three areas, one being the live music arena, another most commonly the ‘family’ indoor restaurant, and the large contemporary bar where patrons can watch sport or sit and relax in the open area that looks out to the tourist attraction that is the Arts Centre.

“The Natural Choice” is the moto of the Dux de Lux’s home-brewed beer. The bar has six permanent brands onsite, and offers a number of other brews depending on the season. The all-year-round beers include the Dux Lager, Hereford Bitter, Ginger Tom, Nor-Wester and Black Shag Stout which have all won gold at the Australian International Beer Awards over the past 10 years, and the Blue Duck Amber Lager which won silver in 1998. The wine list is equally as delivering with a selection of 31 champagnes, whites and reds ranging from $8 a bottle for Jacob’s Creek rose sparkling, through $38.50 for the delicious Mud House Sauvignon Blanc to $110 for the celebratory Veuve Clicquot champagne.
If you fancy a bite to eat whilst relaxing at the bar, the Dux de Lux has a selection of 14 starters and light meals ranging from $7 for their delicious garlic bread, to $18 for the Mediterranean platter of dips and breads. Yummy!
