Birthstones have come a long way from their original use of enabling the user to connect with the earth and the sky and obtain personal growth and healing. These days, many large jewellery manufacturers create and sell generic pieces, their only association being the type of stone with the birthdate of the wearer.
Birthstones were generally thought to display the natural qualities of the person born in that month. They are thought to bring prosperity, luck and abundance to the wearer and date back thousands of years. True to most long running traditions, these stone have changed over time and cultures, however the belief in the energy they provide still remains constant.
The most widely recognized stones for each month are:
January: Garnet – recognized by its dark red colour, people who have a birthdate in January are believed to share the qualities of faith, truth and eternity.
February: Amethyst – Purple in colour, it shoes health, luck and charm
March: Aquamarine – Brings happiness and understanding in its blue depths
April: Diamond – Every girls dream, this symbolizes courage and health. It also marks the 60th wedding anniversary.
May: Emerald – Not green with envy, but rather goodness and love
June: Pearl – Its creamy hues bode well with beauty, peace and nobility
July: Ruby – The red of July signifies love and strength
August: Peridot - Success and peace are provided by this slightly less common green gem
September: Sapphire – The dark blue of Sapphires indicate serenity and health
October: Opal – Purity and hope come with multihued opals
November: Topaz – Yellow is the sign of courage, wisdom and sincerity
December: Turquoise – Happiness and luck are bought by the light blue colour of turquoise
As with any belief that enables the user to find personal enlightenment, it is recommended to seek advise from a person specializing in the craft. There are a few stores around with people who are more that happy to share their expertise to get you started - They will be able to provide the knowledge and experience that is associated with these spirtitual journeys and should be able to match you with the correct stone.
