Facing the shape

Our faces and our hair are intimately related. Your first reaction to someone who has shaved off their hair is “they have no hair”. To frame our individuality to the world Nature has used four basic face shapes. The Heart. The Oval. The Square. The Round [face]. Looking through any glossy magazine, the faces staring coolly back at you are mostly Oval shaped. Fashion mainly uses one face shape to experiment the new looks.

What are you to do? Cue: The hair dresser/ stylist/ designer makes a grand entrance, creates the look and emerges triumphant. Seriously. I do not make grand entrances at Ginger Meggs as we are too busy ….and I’d probably trip over…..

The following advice will help you select a look, a cut or a style that will give you Great Hair! Men and Women’s faces can be divided into four shapes: Round. Heart. Square. Oval.

Round Shaped Face.
A short fringe creates facial height.
Hair angled across the face unbalances the symmetry.
The parting should be on the side breaking up the symmetry of the face.
Hair above the fringe should have volume. This creates facial height.
Hair should be behind the ears [No volume on the side of the face.]

Square Shaped Face.
Hair should come onto the face from the sides softening the edges.
Strong geometric cut enhances the cheekbone.
Slicked back hair is great!
Side parting works well.
Keep the jaw clear! Finish the hair at the cheekbone or go longer than the
chin.

Heart Shaped.
[Long chin and lower forehead]
Thinned out soft fringes [The centre shorter than at the temples.]
Avoid volume on the crown.
Hair cut to increase volume at the chin and downwards. [Volume gradually increased from the jaw line.]

Oval Shaped.
Greater flexibility in which styles to chose.
Cut has to be perfect for the hair type, colour and texture.
Check that your forehead and jaw are in proportion.
Experiment with cuts to test which suits best.

It is the creative tension accommodating the current styles and techniques with our individual looks that gives us vibrancy and great hair!!!!!
